How old does my child have to be before he takes kids music lessons? How can I cultivate musical talent in my child? These are just some of the questions that I often receive, and which I am addressing in this article. In reality, each one of us, male or female, old or young, differs in the way we learn music. Some may start with one musical instrument and end up with a totally different one. Each musician will likely have a story to tell regarding their own history or exposure to music.

There are, however, many ways that we can direct a child’s interest to help their musical talent manifest itself and grow more naturally from an early age. You can begin exposing your child to music at the earliest possible time, sing cradle songs to them in their infancy. It is truly remarkable how music can calm an agitated baby. They love to hear your voice, and they love repetitive chime like songs. Sing to them regularly before going to bed, before nap time, or during any stressful situation.

To cultivate musical abilities in your child, get them familiar with musical instruments. Buy educational toys that make music or sound. When kids enjoy doing something, they do not mind repeating it again and again, hour after hour, day after day. So when they fall in love with a song, expect to hear it over and over again. Young children seem to be very attracted to classical music. They gravitate towards the woodwind and string instruments.

Sing along with them, even if singing is not really your talent. Kids don’t normally care if you sing off key or not. Examples of songs to start with are Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Wheels on the Bus, and others. Any song for children or even folk songs will do. This will engage their attention and develop their love of music.

Ok so let’s say your child is growing up with music toys and songs, but what age do you start a formal kids music education for him? This really depends on whether the interest is truly there or not. I would say that children that are introspective learn language easily, are more likely to enjoy music.

While children that are sports oriented are least likely to understand the intricacies of music. A good time to start kids music classes is usually when the child is about 5 or 6 and understands the basics of reading. When your child begins to be able to distinguish between musical symbols, then he is deemed old enough to start some music lessons. This doesn’t necessarily mean that children cannot begin taking up musical education later on in their life or that they won’t excel if they do this. This is one of those things that differ on a case to case basis.

Once in some type of musical education, you need to promote the child’s interest. You do that by participating with the child in his learning process. Accompany him to his classes. Praise him when he learns a new chord or new melody. Watch him perform during recitals. You have to become your child’s number one fan. This should motivate him to continue developing his musical talents and abilities.
